Teacher Recruitment & Retention
Superintendent of Education Jim Rex has often stated that elevating and reinvigorating South Carolina’s teaching profession is one of his top five priorities. In 2008, a Teacher Recruitment and Retention unit was created within the Division of Educator Quality and Leadership to provide innovative programs and initiatives that would attract new teachers to the classroom. The unit collaborates with the state’s school districts to find successful methods of teacher retention. In addition, foreign educators are recruited to not only teach in classrooms that are often hard-to-staff but to help increase cultural understanding. There are currently Memorandums of Understanding with four countries: China, France, India, and Spain.
